The partition of India in 1947 greatly affected the sub continent where numbers of localities were uprooted and lakhs of people rendered houseless. Thousands of families got uprooted forcing their migration from one part of the country to the other part. The partition adversely affected state of J&K in general and in particular Poonch and Rajouri region. Poonch was a state up to 1947 having its own Maharaja with its boundaries touching Rajouri on southern side Muzzaffrabad on the northern side. Poonch was economically a prosperous region besides being a centre of literary and cultural activities. This was due to the reason of being an important trade highway.
With the partition of India in 1947 the State of J&K also faced partition. Unfortunately Poonch State also suffered partition and with this catastrophe, the position of Poonch being literary and cultural centre and being an important trade highway was finished. This region was reduced into most far-flung and backward region because all the traditional routs passing through it got disrupted.
Historical accounts reveal that before partition, the renowned scholar of Islamic world late Hazarat Maulana Syed Abdul Hussan Ali Nadvi visited Poonch which finds mention in his book, Tohfa-e- Kashmir (Gift of Kashmir). Apart from this great scholar Late Alama Syed Atta Ullah Shah Bukhari paid many visits to Poonch and has addressed large gatherings. Number of other renowned scholars also visited Poonch which indicate that this region was religiously awakened and economically prosperous. Due to the partition, the effluent and economically prosperous Muslims migrated to Pakistan which suddenly deprived the area of its glory. It is a fact that partition of a region deeply affects the same which requires centuries and not decades to revive its position that too when there is peace and calm which was not the case with Poonch region. Due to Indo-Pak conflict, this area was adversely affected bringing all educational and literary activities to grinding halt. Poonch remained epi centre of three Indo-Pak wars which is a reason for maximum divided families being from Poonch. This unfortunate partition has adversely affected the Muslim population which suffered destabilisation and migration forcing majority of Muslim to settle down in far off villages. On account of their settlement in far off area, Muslim population was totally deprived of the educational and commercial activities. Agriculture was there main stay. The three military conflicts between Indo-Pak had an overall adverse affect over the general population which could not usher into an era of progress and prosperity.

Few families who did not migrate to Pakistan in this insurgency were Banday, Mir & Ganai families. Large number of above said families are still residing in Pooneh. Late Sh Ghulam Qadir Banday was a towering leader and was a personality of eommandmg stature During the state of erises, on aeeount of partition late Mr. Banday worked tirelessly for the rehabilitation of the Muslim population. Sinee there was a situat.on of turmoil most of the Muslim population settled in villages. Late Shri Bandey put lot ofefforts to rehabilitate and settle the Muslim population in the city. Since the city was prosperous before the partition, the landed property of the evacuees was lying vacant and there was nobody to look after the same. The Muslims didn't come forward and as such their participation in commercial and in other fields became negligible. The Muslim population felt the effects of partition up to half century. Muslims came to the city only for the purpose of offering Friday prayers and to purchase essential commodities of the life once in a week. They always remained worried to return back as there was no such place in the city where they could stay.Nearly three decades after partitions this area remained totally barren in the educational and literary field as no account is available for any sort of educational or literary activities. In particular, the Muslim society was religiously pushed to a backward position.

The advent of Islamic scholars and the series of educational and Islamic programmes came to a halt, though the Muslim population of the area longed for vibrant educational activities in view of their deep commitment with Islam and the Islamic values and their sincere and heartily attachment with the scholars of Islam yet in view of nonavailability of a congenial religious atmosphere where most of the Mosques were desolated and no religious institution was available coupled with poverty and backwardness of the local population which disheartened them.

Imagine in such a heartburning and educationally backward atmosphere, how much it was essential to impart the knowledge of Quran and Sunna amongst the hapless and simple human creature bringing them out of the morass of innovation and linking their life with the life and teachings of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). This is the law of nature and also the promise of Creator that as reward to the great sacrifices of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) Islam will reach to every house. Allha Subhana-Wa-Talaho created sources for establishment of an educational and Islamic institution in the form of Zia-ul-Uloom in this far flung area.
